Exam Quay’s papers are multiple-choice skills practice. They do not reproduce the complete written CSSE exam and do not assess continuous writing.

What is in the current CSSE exam?

The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex publishes the authoritative exam guidance. Its current information gives English 60 minutes plus 10 minutes’ reading time, and Maths 60 minutes. English includes comprehension and continuous writing.

Applied Reasoning was removed from the English exam from September 2024, for 2025 entry onwards. Older papers and guides can still contain it, so check the year and purpose of any practice material.

Use the CSSE website, its examination guidance and your chosen school’s admissions policy for registration, eligibility and arrangements. As checked on 16 October 2026, CSSE says registration for 2028 entry opens in May 2027; full dates are due by Easter 2027. The available 2027-entry guide is for general information when planning the following year.

Where can I find free CSSE papers and answers?

CSSE’s official practice-material page provides English, continuous-writing and Maths resources with marking material. These are the starting point for seeing the official question and answer formats. They remain on the CSSE website; we do not reproduce them.

For a look at our separate approach, preview Exam Quay’s original CSSE skills questions and worked answers. Read an explanation together before deciding whether the style is useful for your child. A preview shows the question style; it is not a full mock exam or an admission assessment.

Choose printable English or Maths skills practice

Each EQ paper has 50 multiple-choice questions, an A4 question PDF, a separate worked-answer PDF and one online sitting. The online session allows 60 minutes including reading. This is EQ’s practice-session format, not the official CSSE timing or response format.

English skills

Practise reading closely, vocabulary and reasoning about language. The collection includes broader reasoning activities; these should not be taken as a list of current CSSE exam components. Continuous writing needs separate practice.

Maths skills

Work through calculations and mathematical problems, then use the worked answers to examine the method. Our multiple-choice format provides answer options; also practise recording answers in the official written format.

A single paper is a sensible starting point. Choose the bundle if you want three different papers in that subject. It includes six PDF booklets and one online sitting per paper. The bundle costs the same as three singles and contains those same papers, so check earlier purchases to avoid duplicates.

Access lasts 90 days from payment for one learner. Download within that period and keep the files for that learner’s private practice. The PDF and online versions contain the same questions. Printing is at your own cost; no physical papers are posted and these single papers and bundles are one-off purchases.

A useful review matters more than rushing to the next paper

  1. Choose one purpose. Decide whether this session is for learning a method or practising under time pressure. Keep the answer booklet with the supervising adult.
  2. Notice the reason for each mistake. Separate an unfamiliar idea from a misread instruction, a calculation slip or a rushed guess.
  3. Explain one correction. Ask your child to talk through a worked answer in their own words, then try a fresh question using the same skill.
  4. Keep the next step small. Note one topic to revisit and one habit to practise. Return to a full paper when that review has been useful.

You can print this checklist with your browser. Keep any notes private; you do not need to send us your child’s name, answers or scores.

Before you buy

Are these official CSSE past papers?

No. They are original independent practice from Exam Quay, with no CSSE or school endorsement. Use them alongside current official materials, not as a replacement for the full exam format.

Will the mark tell me whether my child will pass?

No. EQ feedback is for practice, not a prediction of admission. Independent teacher moderation and pupil timing calibration have not yet been completed. Offline work is self-marked; it does not produce an online benchmark.

Can we complete a downloaded paper online too?

One online sitting is included per paper. Because the questions are the same, downloading either booklet before finishing that sitting excludes it from the first-sitting comparison cohort. The mark and worked feedback are still available.
