What is in the Sutton SET?
The published 2027-entry guidance describes two multiple-choice papers, English and Maths, broadly based on Key Stage 2. Each takes 40–50 minutes. There is no separate verbal-reasoning or non-verbal-reasoning test. Answers go on a separate sheet, and some questions require more than one selection.
The six participating schools are Greenshaw, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar, Wallington High School for Girls and Wilson’s. Greenshaw uses SET results for its ability places and has no second-stage exam. Passing a test does not guarantee a school place. See the official SET FAQs for 2027 entry (PDF).
Which entry year are you preparing for?
September 2028 entry: Wilson’s currently gives 14 September 2027 as the expected SET date. This is provisional, not a complete confirmed timetable. Check the school’s current admissions FAQs and your chosen schools for registration and access-arrangement deadlines.
For context, the main tests for September 2027 entry have already taken place: SET on 15 September 2026; the girls’ second stage on 26 September; the boys’ second stage on 3 October. These are past dates, not the next application window. Official 2027-entry dates.

The question counts, precise timings and marking rules are EQ practice settings, not a promise to reproduce the official papers. A three-paper bundle includes six PDF booklets and three online sittings for one learner. It costs the same as three singles and contains those same papers, so check earlier purchases to avoid duplicates.
Download from My papers within 90 days of payment and keep the files for the licensed learner’s private practice. PDF and online versions contain the same questions. Print at home at your own cost; no physical papers are posted and these single papers and bundles are one-off purchases.

How is the second stage different?
Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar and Wilson’s share a later English and Maths examination. Their published 2027-entry guidance describes written rather than multiple-choice papers, approximately 45–60 minutes each. Read Wilson’s second-stage FAQs for the current requirements.
Nonsuch and Wallington High School for Girls share the NWSSEE. Its published guidance gives English and Maths 40–50 minutes each, with written responses. English is a writing task rather than a comprehension paper. See the official NWSSEE FAQs (PDF).
EQ’s Sutton papers on this page cover first-stage practice only. If your child is preparing for a second stage, plan separate written English and Maths practice using the relevant school’s guidance. A multiple-choice score cannot assess a child’s extended writing.
A practical way to use a Sutton paper
- Start with the instructions. Try a few samples without a timer. Ask your child to explain whether each question needs one answer or more than one.
- Choose a purpose. Use an untimed session to work on an unfamiliar skill, or a timed paper to practise pacing. Keep the answer booklet with the supervising adult.
- Review the cause of a mistake. Was it a missing method, a misread question, a calculation slip or time pressure? In English, ask which words in the text support the answer.
- Practise one correction. Explain the method in your own words, then try a different question. Leave the next full paper for a later session, after reviewing what the first one showed.
For printed work, practise keeping question numbers and answer positions aligned. Keep any notes private; there is no need to send us your child’s name, answers or scores.
Before you buy
Are these official past papers?
No. They are original independent practice, with no affiliation to or endorsement from the Sutton schools or SET. The free official examples above remain on the schools’ websites.
Can the result predict a pass?
No. EQ marks and topic feedback are for practice. Independent teacher moderation and pupil timing calibration have not yet been completed. Our practice comparison is not a national percentile or an admissions prediction. Read the scoring and comparison policy.
Can we use the printed paper and the online sitting?
Yes, but they use the same questions. Offline work is self-marked and is not uploaded or benchmarked. Downloading either booklet before finishing online excludes that sitting from the first-sitting comparison cohort; the mark and worked feedback remain available.
