What is in the Kent Test?

Kent County Council describes two multiple-choice papers, with responses recorded on a separate answer sheet, plus a writing exercise. The council’s preparation guidance and official familiarisation booklet (PDF) explain the format.

  • English and Maths: one hour altogether. Each subject has five minutes of practice followed by a 25-minute test. English includes reading comprehension and literacy skills.
  • Reasoning: about one hour including practice, covering verbal, non-verbal and spatial reasoning. The booklet gives verbal reasoning ten minutes of practice and a 20-minute test; the other sections are timed separately.
  • Writing: 40 minutes, including ten minutes to plan. It is not marked as part of the test, but may be considered by the headteacher assessment panel.

Check your child’s entry year

The published September 2027 entry tests have already taken place: 10 September 2026 for children at Kent primary schools, and 12–13 September for other candidates. Results were scheduled for 15 October 2026. These are past dates, not the next registration window.

For September 2028 entry, a full timetable is not yet shown on the council’s registration page at our 16 October 2026 check. Use Kent’s current registration guidance for dates and access-arrangement instructions. Medway and Bexley run separate selection tests.

Test registration and the application for a secondary school place are separate steps. A grammar assessment does not guarantee an offer; read each school’s admissions criteria and the council’s school-application guidance.

Free Kent Test samples and answers

Use these in order: first become familiar with the official response format, then explore EQ’s question and explanation style.

  1. Kent County Council’s free familiarisation booklet (PDF) includes examples, an answer sheet and explained answers. It is hosted by the council; it is not a complete past paper.
  2. GL Assessment’s free familiarisation materials offer additional subject examples. Local test timings and question counts can differ.
  3. EQ’s five free Kent practice questions and worked answers cover English, Maths and verbal reasoning. They come from our mixed-subject taster, not a paid paper, and do not establish full-paper difficulty. Read them without starting a timed session.

A three-paper subject bundle includes 150 questions, six PDF booklets and three online sittings. It costs the same as three singles and contains those same papers: check earlier purchases to avoid duplicates.

Download from My papers within 90 days of payment and keep the files for the licensed learner’s private practice. Printing is at your own cost. No physical papers are posted and these single papers and bundles are one-off purchases.

Plan separately for non-verbal reasoning, spatial reasoning and writing. None is covered by these EQ bundles. Our papers do not reproduce the combined test or calculate an overall Kent Test score.

A manageable practice plan

  1. Start without a clock. Read a few free examples together. Ask your child to explain the method and how they chose their answer.
  2. Separate learning from timing. Use a short untimed session for an unfamiliar skill. Use an EQ timer for extended subject practice, rather than treating it as the official component length.
  3. Practise the answer sheet. Use the council’s sample sheet to check that question numbers and answer positions stay aligned. Follow the instructions for each question.
  4. Review before the next paper. Sort mistakes into a missing skill, a misread instruction, a slip or time pressure. Revisit one method with a different example before starting another full paper.

Keep reading and writing alongside subject practice, and leave room for the reasoning areas outside EQ’s current range. Keep your child’s notes private; there is no need to send us names, answers or scores.

Before you buy

Are these official Kent Test papers?

No. They are original independent practice, with no affiliation to or endorsement from Kent County Council, GL Assessment or any grammar school. The official free materials above remain on their publishers’ websites.

Can the result predict a grammar-school place?

No. EQ marks and topic feedback support practice. Independent teacher moderation and pupil timing calibration have not yet been completed. Our comparison is not a national percentile, an official Kent score or an admissions prediction. Read the scoring and comparison policy.

Are the printable and online questions different?

No: they are two formats of the same paper. Offline work is self-marked and is not uploaded or benchmarked. Downloading either booklet before finishing online excludes that sitting from the first-sitting comparison cohort; the mark and worked feedback remain available.
