No sign-up or payment for the preview. Our independent subject papers do not reproduce the combined Bexley test. Non-verbal reasoning is not included.
What is in the Bexley Selection Test?
Bexley Council’s current guidance names Quest Assessments as the provider. There are two multiple-choice papers, each approximately 50 minutes plus instructions, taken in one session with a break. Sections are timed separately and the invigilator tells children when to move on.
Quest’s Bexley guide describes the two papers as:
- Paper one: verbal ability and English comprehension.
- Paper two: numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.
Responses go on a separate machine-readable answer sheet. Use the current provider’s familiarisation material to practise the layout; question instructions may require more than one answer.
Which schools use this test?
The same selection test serves Beths Grammar School, Bexley Grammar School, Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, and Townley Grammar School. Being deemed selective does not itself guarantee a place: individual admissions criteria still apply. The Kent and Medway tests are separate. See Bexley’s registration and school information.
Check the entry year before using a date
For September 2027 entry, testing has finished. Registration ran from 1 to 31 March 2026; tests took place between 2 and 10 September at participating primary schools and 7–10 September at grammar-school centres. Results were issued on 2 October 2026. These are past dates.
Planning for September 2028 entry? Quest’s next-cycle page currently marks the registration closing date and test-centre dates as to be confirmed. Bexley Grammar School advises registration in March; confirm the published 2027 window and any access-arrangement deadlines with the council. Do not reuse the 2026 dates as next year’s timetable.
Registering for a test is separate from applying for a secondary school place. Follow the council’s school-application guidance for the relevant entry year and apply through your home local authority.
Free Bexley samples and familiarisation
Start with the provider’s resources to understand the test, then use EQ’s preview to see whether our explanation style suits your child.
- Quest’s free Bexley familiarisation resources: open the Free resources section for English, Maths, verbal-reasoning and non-verbal-reasoning sample booklets and answer-sheet practice.
- Quest’s guidance for children (PDF): what to expect and how to use the answer sheet.
- Quest’s guidance for parents (PDF): preparation and support at home.
- EQ’s five free Bexley questions with worked answers: two English, two Maths and one verbal-reasoning question, available without a timed session or registration.
EQ’s examples come from our free mixed-subject taster, not from a paid paper. They illustrate our question and explanation style rather than establish full-paper difficulty. Jump to English, Maths or verbal reasoning.

Turn a practice paper into a useful next step
- Try a few free examples first. Ask your child to explain how they reached an answer. Notice whether the difficulty is understanding the idea or following the instruction.
- Check how many answers are needed. Some examples ask for two or three selections. Read the instruction before choosing, and practise matching the question number to the answer sheet.
- Review one skill at a time. For reading, find the words supporting the answer. For Maths, reconstruct the method. For vocabulary, use the word in a different sentence.
- Choose the next session from that review. Revisit an unfamiliar idea without a timer before another full paper. Leave time for reading, school learning and non-verbal reasoning alongside EQ’s subject practice.
Paper numbers identify different question sets, not calibrated difficulty levels. Keep the answer booklet with the supervising adult and any notes about your child’s work private.
Before you buy
Are these Quest papers or official past papers?
No. EQ creates original independent practice. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Quest Assessments, Bexley Council or the grammar schools. The official resources linked above stay on their publishers’ websites.
Does an EQ mark predict a selective result?
No. It is a practice mark, not an official Bexley age-standardised score or admissions prediction. Independent teacher moderation and pupil timing calibration are still outstanding. Read our scoring and comparison policy.
Can we print and then sit the same paper online?
Yes, but both formats contain the same questions. Printed work is self-marked and is not uploaded or benchmarked. Downloading either booklet before finishing online excludes that sitting from the first-sitting comparison cohort; the mark and worked feedback remain available.
